A VICTORIAN GILT-BRONZE AND SPECIMEN MARBLE OCCASIONAL TABLE
拍品 363 ARTISTRY IN STONE

Hardstone decoration in furniture and works of art has been prevalent from the founding in 1588 of the first state pietre dure manufactory, by the Grand Duke of Tuscany in Florence, through the French workshops of the 17th and 18th century, the Bourbon manufactories of 18th century Naples and Madrid to 19th century revivals. The micro-mosaic technique used in the Venetian mirror (lot 364) and the paperweight (lot 368) is perhaps the most delicate of this genre; the ancient monuments shown about the central Basilica of St.Peter a reminder of the inspiration to this craft of the Eternal City.
