with inscription by the artist's grandson 'I certify that this is an original drawing/by old John Varley/Born 1779/Died 1842/Herbt Varley Grandson/6th Aug: 1899' (on the reverse)

It has not been possible to identify the town which is depicted in the present watercolour, though it has been suggested that it could be either Chester, York or Jedburgh, three historical cities all famed for their impressive cathedrals dominating the skyline of the landscapes in which they sit.
