Prout is particularly celebrated for his sympathetic depictions of architecture as is illustrated in the present watercolour. Writing about Prout's technique, Ruskin wrote that he had 'been so scrupulous and fondly faithful: and so often rendered the character of peculiar features, of which I believe few people...could understand the precision' (Letter of May 1849, Works, XXXVIII, p. 343).
