Born in Ashburton, Devon in 1752, the Rev. John Swete was the son of a surgeon, Nicholas Tripe, but he changed his name to Swete after inheriting a large fortune from an aunt. A talented gentleman artist and topographer, he made a series of tours across the county writing over twenty journals - Picturesque Sketches of Devon (1789-1800) - which he lavishly illustrated with watercolours, in the style of his contemporary, the landscape painter, William Payne.
Swete was appointed Prebendary of Exeter in 1781 and lived at Oxton House in the village of Kenton, near Exeter (see lot 127.)
