With curved single-edged fullered blade double-edged towards the point and decorated on each side with gilt trophies and inscriptions against a blued ground, the inscriptions stating DURRIEU ANTOINE CHEF DE BATAILLON on one side and AIDE DE CAMP DU GENERAL LAMARQUE on the other, the back-edge signed KLINGENTHAL at the forte, gilt brass hilt with pierced and scrolled knuckle-guard and short downcurved rear quillon, and fluted hardwood grip, in original leather scabbard with chased gilt brass mounts and two rings for suspension

Durrieu enjoyed a long and distinguished military career in Napoleon's army. Having joined the army in 1793 he spent over twenty years on active service in theatres including the Spanish border, Italy and Russia. He fought in the battle of Waterloo and held numerous honours including the Grand-Croix of the Legion d'Honneur. He would have served as Aide de Camp to General Lamarque during the Italian campaigns.
