With spear-point fullered blade etched with the cypher of Edward VII, the entwined 'S' Spencer monogram beneath an Earl's coronet and the arms of Trinity House, gilt-brass solid 'Gothic' hilt of naval pattern with applied arms of Trinity House, folding inner-flap and wire-bound shagreen-covered grip, blue and bullion sword-knot, in original gilt-brass mounted black leather scabbard with two suspension rings

John Poyntz, 5th Earl Spencer (1835-1910), served as an Elder Brother of Trinity House between 1905 and 1910. The Elder Brethren of Trinity House were usually retired flag officers, the 5th Earl having served as First Lord of the Admiralty.
