Slightly tapering rectangular étui-à-tablettes with arched top, sides of cover and base of blonde tortoiseshell inlaid with rose gold and green gold flowers and foliage, the two-colour gold mounts chased with flowers and foliage, the obverse and reverse of the cover applied with pierced gold inscription 'SOUVENIR D'AMITIE' within pierced reeded gold borders with tied ribbon cresting and laurel garlands, the reverse of the base centred with an oval plaque set with monogram 'CM' in gold, on pink silk (plaque on obverse missing), containing a three-leaf ivory tablet and wooden pencil with gold cap, polished gold push-piece

The monogram 'CM' is that of Princess Caroline Maria Theresa of Saxony (1770-1804), née Princess of Parma and Infanta of Spain. For portrait miniatures of her and her brother-in-law set in gold rings, see lot 90.
