CASE: later cresting to re-instated rising flat top hood with restored inset barley twist columns, glazed side panels, rectangular trunk door, the plinth on later skirting, case with restorations and replaced veneers DIAL: the latched 10 in. square brass dial signed along the lower edge 'Eduardus East Londini', winged cherub spandrels to silvered chapter ring, seconds ring and date square to the matted centre, replaced blued steel hands MOVEMENT: five latched and ringed pillars, anchor escapement and outside countwheel strike on bell, re-instated bolt-and-shutter maintaining power and replaced case securing bracket; pendulum, two weights, winding key, case key

專家說明

One of the great clockmakers of the 17th Century, Edward East (1602-1697) was born in Southill Bedfordshire. In 1618 he was apprenticed in Goldsmiths' Company to Rogers of London and Free of the Company in 1627. He worked in Pall Mall in the 1620s, at 'The musical Clock, Fleet Street' in the 1640s and then later at 'The Sun, outside Temple Bar'. He was watch and chief clockmaker to Charles II from 1660 and was one of the founder members of the Clockmakers' Company in 1631. An ebonised pearwood architectural longcase clock by East sold Christie's London, 6 December 2006, lot 112 (£355,200 inclusive of buyer's premium). See also lot 20.
