Each with rectangular padded back and seat covered in crimson foliate loose covers over crimson and white floral chintz covers, the arms and legs with blind fretwork carving, one with original lignum vitae front castors and leather rear castors and two pierced angle brackets, the other chair with later brass castors and three pierced angle brackets, with ash seat-rails

The chairs are designed in the mid-eighteenth century 'Modern' style as promoted by Thomas Chippendale's patterns for Chinese fretwork in his Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 1754-1762. A set of related side chairs, stools and armchairs with fretwork-carved legs and pierced stretchers was supplied to John Murray (d. 1764), 2nd Duke of Atholl for Blair Castle, Perthshire by William Masters of Coventry Street, Piccadilly in 1756 and also in 1760. A pair of side chairs from the set, which comprised at least fifty side chairs, was sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 14 June 2001, lot 109 (£17,625).
A pair of chairs of almost identical design was sold by the late Sir Charles Clore, Christie's, London, 20 November 1986, lot 183 (£15,000) and another pair with C-scroll angle-brackets was sold anonymously, Christie's, New York, 16 April 1994, lot 214 ($54,050).
