A GEORGE III MAHOGANY DISPLAY CABINET-ON-CHEST

This china display-case is in the tradition of a group of elaborate cabinets of circa 1765, all of upright form and, as with the present lot, incorporating a chest of drawers on tall square legs, but with fret-carved superstructures. One such was supplied by William Vile to Queen Charlotte in 1761 while another was in the collection of Robert D'Arcy, 4th Earl of Holderness (d.1778) at Hornby Castle, Yorkshire.
The glazing pattern is a variation of the design featured in Thomas Chippendale's The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 1763, plate 95, and relates most closely to that of a bookcase attributed to Chippendale sold Sotheby's house sale, Fawley House, Oxfordshire, 14/15 October 2003, lot 76, and in a more complex form on the magnificent bookcase supplied by Chippendale to Sir Lawrence Dundas for 19 Arligton Street, sold Christie's, London, 18 June 2008, lot 6.
