with identifying inscription: 'Mrs Saltinshall and her daughter who was afterwards Countess of Halifax and mother of Lady Lucy Montague 1st wife of Francis 1 Earl of Guilford, & 7th Lord North, and Mother of Fredk. 2 Earl of Guilford K.G.' (on a label on the reverse)

(Probably) By descent to the sitter, Ricarda Posthuma Montagu, Countess of Halifax, née Saltonstale (c. 1689-1711), first wife of George Montagu, 1st Earl of Halifax (c. 1684-1739), and by descent to their daughter,
(Probably) Lady Lucy Montagu, subsequently Countess of Guilford (d. 1734), wife of Francis North, 1st Earl of Guilford (1704-1790), and by descent.
