This type of hooded wall clock is most commonly associated with John Ellicott, with the shallow-arched hood and dial following the design of that maker's longcase clocks. Examples by Ellicott have been sold: the Vitale collection, Christie's London, 26 November 1996, lot 240 (£14,950) and anonymous sale, Christie's London, 5 July 2006, lot 126 (£9,600).
Francis Perigal (b.1734) was apprenticed in 1748 and a Freeman of the Clockmakers' Company 1756-1775. He worked at Threadneedle Street and Royal Exchange. The number stamped on the front plate is most likely a Thwaites reference number. Ainsworth Thwaites supplied movements to many of the top London makers and the number corresponds to a date of circa 1783 in the firm's production.
