拍品 125 Eisa was Balenciaga's Spanish fashion house and was named for his mother who was a dress maker. Having opened in San Sebastian in 1919, the couture house, which also had premises in Madrid and Barcelona, was temporarily left behind when the designer established himself in Paris in 1937. At the end of the Spanish civil war, Balenciaga re-opened each of these businesses, and although he managed them apparently independently of his Parisian house, many of the garments followed the models produced in Paris and many of his most important employees spent time in Spain during their careers.

This lot makes reference to the influence of Spanish and historical dress on Balenciaga's design aesthetic. He favoured spotted textiles throughout many of his collections and this, together with the dramatic gathering and draping of the bustle skirts in the back, conjur images of not only an 1870s lady, but also the Spanish Flamenco dancer.
