專家說明

This canvas is from the left hand section of Gainsborough's Country Churchyard, of which a second fragment formerly owned by Lord Robert Sutherland Gower is recorded (Hayes, no. 125b). The composition is recorded in reverse in an aquatint of 1790 by M.C. Prestal, published by Robert Pollard with the first sixteen lines of Gray's Elegy in a Country Churchyard, which was dedicated to Sir Joshua Reynolds.
