engraving, circa 1502/03, with part of a Bull's Head watermark (Meder 62 or 63), a fine, rich and clear Meder c impression, with thread margins, trimmed to the platemark in places, a few tiny stains and pinpoint foxmarks, otherwise in very good condition

專家說明

Although formally most closely related to the Standard Bearer (B. 87; M., Holl. 92), this engraving is thematically as well as technically a companion piece to Saint George on Horseback (see lot 16). Both representations of Saint George are unusual in that they do not show the saintly soldier in battle but in triumph, a variant that first seems to have appeared at the time Dürer created these prints.

The saint is shown carrying the standard of the Order of Saint George. Emperor Maximilian strongly supported this order of knights in preparation of a crusade against the Ottoman Empire, and Saint George was also Maximilian's patron saint.
