Modelled standing in contro-posto pose, turned to his right and with his right foot forward, in a plumed hat and standing before a tree-stump on a flat base with canted corners, on a gilt-metal garland and fretwork base issuing a branched tree with two nozzles and applied with porcelain flowers (the figure broken through waist and left wrist and restored, restoration to hat, staff and right foot, metal regilt, some branches repaired, losses and damages to flowers)

This figure has been variously identified as Harlequin, Scaramouche and Beltrame, although Meredith Chilton considers the character of Capitano more likely. For an Augsburg decorated example and discussion of this figure, see Meredith Chilton, Harlequin Unmasked (Singapore, 2001), p. 292, no. 69. For the example in the Arnhold Collection, see Maureen Cassidy-Geiger, Arnhold Collection of Meissen Porcelain 1710-50 (London, 2008), no. 278, where she suggests that the model may have been derived from etchings by Salvator Rosa. An enamelled example is illustrated by Yvonne Hackenbroch, Irwin Untermyer Collection (London, 1956), pl. 68, fig. 49. Another Augsburg decorated figure was sold by Bonham's London on 3 December 2008, lot 90. Other examples to come to auction include a later-decorated figure from the Collection of Marian and Michael Sabee sold by Sotheby's New York on 9 November 2007, lot 2, and an example dated 1730 sold anonymously by Christie's London on 28 June 1982, lot 82.
