MICHEL, Étienne (fl. 1800-1820). Traité du Citronier. Paris: chez l'Auteur-Editeur, Arthus Bertrand & Deterville, 1816.

2° (520 x 350mm). Half-title. 21 stipple-engraved plates printed in colour, drawn by Pancrace Bessa and engraved by Gabriel, Jarry and others. (4 plates browned, plate 10 heavily, occasional light spotting and browning.) Recent olive straight-grained quarter morocco over old marbled paper-covered boards (corners lightly rubbed, spine fractionally faded). Provenance: Peter Gilbert, Baron Daresbury (bookplate).

BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED FIRST SEPARATE EDITION OF THIS MAJOR WORK ON LEMONS AND RELATED CITRUS FRUIT. Michel, a French publisher and (in part) editor of the Nouveau Duhamel, separately published it from the revised and expanded edition of Duhamel's Traité des Arbres et Arbustes (1800-1819). The plates show single fruits with sections, flowers, leaves or collections of citrus fruits. Pancrace Bessa (1772-1835) was an apprentice of Redouté and of Van Spaendonck. Bessa and Redouté were the artists for the Nouveau Duhamel. Later Bessa taught the Duchess of Berry and became the painter for the Jardin des Plantes in Paris. Nissen BBI 1362; An Oak Spring Pomona, 75; Pritzel 6198; Stafleu and Cowan 5967.
