BODONI, Giovanni Battista (1740-1813). Manuale tipografico. Parma: Presso la Vedova [Bodoni Press (Bodoni's widow and Luigi Orsi)], 1818.
2 volumes, 4° (319 x 224mm). 3 folding sheets of music. (Lacking engraved portrait frontispiece.) Contemporary three-quarter vellum over marbled boards, gilt spines (missing spine labels).
A FINE, LARGE COPY of one of the finest typographic works: a 'libro importantissimo' (Brooks) and an 'ouvrage magnifique' (Graesse). This second edition is much enlarged, completed after Bodoni's death by Luigi Orsi, director of the printing house at Parma, for the typographer's widow, and contains examples of more than 200 typefaces. It shows the impressive and unrivalled range of Bodoni's types, presenting roman, greek, cyrillic and exotic alphabets, together with their versions in italics, capitals, etc., ending with type-ornaments. About 290 copies were printed. Brooks 1216; Brunet I, 1027; Graesse I, p. 460. (2)
