Cathedral chimes - In broad terms, the striking mechanism consists of gongs that are circular steel coils, fixed at one end and which progressively surround the minute repeater movement. When struck by hammers, they vibrate and produce chimes.
"Cathedral" gongs refer to a mechanism whereby the steel coils are wrapped almost twice around the movement, and in result enhances both the quality and duration of the chime.
