Acquired from the above by his niece Janet de Coux and Eliza Miller in the 1970's.
By descent to the present owner.

The present lot and lots 188, 199 and 200 were acquired by the sculptor and art collector Eliza Miller and her companion Janet de Coux, also a sculptor, in the early 1970's in Switzerland when they visited the artist. Tobey was a cousin of Janet's mother, but the two had not met before. Correspondence between Janet and Mark Tobey is kept in the Archives of American Art at the Smithsonian Institution.

Achim Moeller has kindly confirmed the authenticity of this work and that it is included in the archives of The Mark Tobey Project.
