拍品 1723 A GLOWING CABOCHON

In over 2000 years of mining, the finest jadeite has only ever been found in what is today Northern Burma. In colour, it displays a vivid emerald green, pure and penetrating, with an intense saturation and a tone that is neither too dark, nor too light. This exceptional 'old mine' (lao keng) material is exceedingly rare and extremely difficult to source in the market today. Complemented by a fine texture, it also exhibits a highly-desirable vitreous translucency. Offered as Lot 1723, this jadeite cabochon ring is an excellent example of this superior quality.

When highly translucent jadeite is polished into a high-domed cabochon, the jadeite material will display unique optical effects. This phenomenon is a result of light concentrating at the base of the cabochon and then reflecting so that the gem glows with a soft radiance. The present jadeite stone is the ideal material for its cabochon form. Double-sided and with a bottom that is slightly curved, the stone exhibits a gleam that appears to come from a point - like a bulb. Not all gem-quality jadeite cabochons can achieve this effect, making the present stone exceptional. Most jadeite cabochons are cut flat and backed with a reflective spoon-shaped metal reflector in order to imitate that special glow of better material such as those of the 'old mine' quality - as represented by Lot 1723. Shaped as a perfectly proportioned 'ginko' nut, this graceful jewel displays the very desirable glow from all four directions without the aid of any metal backing. The stone reveals a vivacity that is unrivalled, and radiates a particularly beautiful and vivid emerald green hue, a highly-collectable imperial colour once favoured by the Empress Dowager Cixi herself.
