IN THE MANNER OF MAYHEW & INCE, THIRD QUARTER 18TH CENTURY
Each with an oval padded back with fluted border surmounted by a cluster of roses, with foliate-carved downswept scrolled arms, the serpentine seat above a fluted apron, on turned tapering fluted legs headed by paterae, with batten-carrying holes, two chairs with gros and petit point needlework back incorporating a girl within a cartouche and later needlework seat, two chairs upholstered in pale gold foliate-silk damask, later gessoed and gilt, previously decorated, with traces of green decoration

專家說明

These 'cabriolet' chairs, with fluted frames and Roman-medallioned backs crowned by 'Venus' rose bouquets, are designed in the George III French/antique fashion of the 1770s. Related rose-crowned chairs with fluted baluster legs may possibly have been executed by the Golden Square firm of Messrs John Mayhew and William Ince for Northumberland House, London (see P. Macquoid and R. Edwards, The Dictionary of English Furniture, rev. ed., 1954, vol. I, p. 290. fig. 203). Another chair of the present pattern was sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 6 July 1996 lot 28.
