專家說明

This handsome George II 'Chippendale' stool has Gothick columnar legs in the novel and patriotic fashion promoted by the connoisseur Horace Walpole, and by popularised by B.and T. Langleys, Gothic Architecture Improved by Rules and Proportions, 1747. The pattern, with large pillars clustered by four smaller ones, corresponds to that of a 1759 bed-post engraving issued in Thomas Chippendale, The Gentleman and Cabinet-Makers Director, 3rd. ed. 1762, pl.34. no. B. The pattern, with similar ribboned plinth, was adopted for armchairs sold Sothebys London 22 March 2002, lot 155.
