Thomas Rowlandson (1756-1827)

The prestigious Dogget's Coat and Badge is the longest standing rowing contest in the world and has been held annually on the River Thames since 1715. The course runs from London Bridge to Cadogan Pier, Chelsea, passing under eleven bridges. The race was traditionally undertaken by up to six apprentice Watermen of the Thames in the ferries used to transport passengers across the river, and took place on 1st August. These days the competitors race in late July in single sculling boats. The first prize is a Watermen's coat with a silver badge.
