CHARLES GEORGE GORDON (1833-1885)

Autograph letter signed ('C.G. Gordon') to 'Faulkner', [Le Havre], 7 May 1881, announcing his imminent departure for Mauritius, and hoping to see the recipient in Suez, 'I will come and stay with you a few days, but at my expence', 2 pages, 8vo; [with] Colonel Garnet WOLSELEY. Autograph draft telegram to Gordon in Khartoum (readdressed via Sir Evelyn Baring in Cairo), War Office, 21 February 1884, 'My private advice. Do not answer telegrams about your doings. Ask to be let alone. Results speak for themselves', one page, 8vo. Provenance: the Spiro Family Collection.

Ironically, Wolseley's telegram was written only a month before the Mahdi cut the telegraph lines from Khartoum. (2)
