Each with an urn-shaped body decorated with exotic birds amidst foliage and water lilies, with a piastre-cast rim, hung with laurel swags, flanked by paired scrolled handles each centred by a Bacchic mask, above a rocaille and Greek key decorated shaped base, the porcelain probably replaced

With the finely-chased Bacchic masks joined by laurel garlands, piastre-cast lip and Greek key base, this pair of vases is closely related to a pair of ormolu-mounted Sèvres porcelain vases in the goût chinois, dated 1765-70, in Waddesdon Manor, Buckinghamshire (ill. S. Eriksen, Early Neo-classicism in France, pl. 238).
Further related pairs of lavender-ground Chinese porcelain vases with water-lily decoration include a pair formerly in the collection of Madame de Polès, sold at Christie's, Monaco, 20 June 1992, lot 58 (FF532,800), and another, sold from the Alexander Collection, Christie's, New York, 30 April 1999, lot 13 ($55,200) and illustrated in G. & R. Wannenes, Les Bronzes Ornementaux et les Objets Montés, Milan, 2004, p. 356.
