A GEORGE II MAHOGANY POLESCREEN

Eccentric designs for garden furniture published by Edwards and Darley in 1754 are illustrated in Peter Ward-Jackson, English Furniture Designs for the Eighteenth Century, 1958, pls. 133 and 134. Similar 'rustic' or picturesque patterns were published by Robert Manwaring (op. cit., pl 177), whilst a group in Ideas for Rustic Furniture, published by I. & J. Taylor, circa 1790-95 is perhaps the closest in character to this polescreen (Morrison Heckscher, 'Eighteenth Century Rustic Furniture Designs', F.H.S.J., 1975, pp. 61-62).
