ATTRIBUTED TO THOMAS CHIPPENDALE, THIRD QUARTER 18TH CENTURY
The rectangular moulded and dentilled cornice above a cavetto frieze and a pair of panelled doors inlaid with stars in the corners, enclosing six cedar-lined slides, above a waved moulded waist moulding, the base with four short mahogany-lined drawers and one long mahogany-lined drawer with original lion-mask handles, on bracket feet with laminated curved blocks, the backboards and underside with a thin red wash, the reverse with two fragmentary Bridges & Co., Folkestone depository labels one inscribed 'Schreiber No. 6 28/8/30'

The clothes-press shares many features associated with pieces supplied by Thomas Chippendale. The star-inlay on the doors is found on the pair of bookcases and the 'Violin Bookcase' supplied to Henry, 10th Earl of Pembroke, for Pembroke House, London and now at Wilton House, both of which have been associated with payments to Chippendale (C. Gilbert, The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale, London, 1978, vol. I, pp. 147-150 & vol. II, pp. 42-44). Like the present clothes-press, those supplied by Chippendale for William, 5th Earl of Dumfries in 1763 also featured cedar-lined slides (Christie's Dumfries House sale catalogue, 12 July 2007, vol. I, lot 125). One of the latter was described as 'A Large mahog'y cloaths press with folding doors and sliding shelves of cedar and bays apron 9...' The unusual Chinese-style waist moulding relates to (an unpublished) cabinet with similar pagoda-swept cresting, supplied by the Golden Square cabinet-makers Ince & Mayhew, at Burghley House, Lincolnshire.
