專家說明
There are two versions of this portrait, the present lot and the picture in the Hallwyl collection, Stockholm (Hallwylska malerisamlingen, 1997, pp. 228-9, no. 149, illustrated). At the time Professor Ekkart was working on the monograph of the artist (op. cit), he was unaware of this and the provenances of both pictures were confused. He believes both versions to be autograph and the existence of both pictures can be explained, in his view, by the fact that a second version was executed as a gift for the sitter's daughter who married in 1635.
Josias van Herrewijn, son of Marten Herrewijn and Laurenske de Koningh, was a merchant in Bremen and Haarlem. In 1607 he married first Sara de Haze (1577-1614) and later in 1617 Sara Sas.
We are grateful to Professor R.E.O. Ekkart for his help in cataloguing this lot.
