FIRST EDITION of "one of the earliest transcontinental projects..." (Howes). Claiming to be the originator of the endeavor to build a railroad to the Pacific Ocean, Carver here includes an address to Congress asking for a charter to build the railroad, "An Inquiry into the Practicability and Benefits of a Railroad...," and extracts from several newspaper articles discussing the subject.
