拍品 495 Ernst Riegel (1871-1939) trained from 1890 in the workshop of Munich goldsmith, Fritz von Miller. Whilst still in Munich, Riegel became a teacher at the Municipal Craft School for Goldsmiths. It was there he produced a various number of silver mounts for the Grand Duke of Hesse's collection of agate and nephrite bowls - introducing a modern interpretation of objects, which were primarily kept in curiosity cabinets.
In 1907, Riegel joined the Darmstadt artists' colony, which became a leading centre for Jugendstil and the applied arts in Germany.
After replacing several members of the original Darmstadt group, Riegel went on to become a professor at the Stadtische Werkschule, in Cologne, in 1912 and from 1920 was in charge of the goldsmiths' shop of the Institute of Religious Art.
