A REGENCY OAK, BURR-ELM AND EBONISED CENTRE TABLE

The table relates to one that was almost certainly supplied by the cabinet-maker George Bullock (d. 1818) of Tenterden Street, Hanover Square for Napoleon Bonaparte's use whilst in exile on St Helena. The latter is veneered in oak, inlaid with ebony and features ebonised paterae on the platform at the top of the sabre legs (C. Wainwright, ed., George Bullock: Cabinet-maker, London, 1988, p. 81, no. 19). Related tables were sold anonymously at Christie's, New York, 26 June 1982, lot 92; Bonham's, London, 2 October 1986, lot 102 and a table of similar design, but much larger proportions and with a circular top was sold by the late Major Eustace Robb, Tew Park, Great Tew, Oxfordshire, Christie's house sale, 27-29 May 1987, lot 33 and re-sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 27 November 2003, lot 160.
