EXCEEDINGLY RARE FIRST EDITION FROM AN IMPORTANT COLLECTION of these magnificent plates of Javanese costume, life and topography as recorded by the author during his service in Java, 1819-1827. The work was first issued in 4 parts, in printed wrappers, but only 2 complete copies are recorded by Bastin and Brommer, both in the Netherlands. Reviewing this Phillipps copy, Bastin proclaimed it "unbelievably bright and rich". Indeed, lead-based pigments are known to have been used to colour some copies which have since darkened very badly. Haks and Maris p.236; Bastin and Brommer p.11,12, notes 186, 187; Lipperheide Ld 23.
