The serpentine toprail above a pierced and scrolled baluster splat, the padded drop-in later seat covered in associated 18th century petit-point needlework, on cabriole legs headed by shells and husks, joined by turned stretchers, on pad feet, the underside of the back seat rail stamped 'M.H.A'

A side chair with a similar shell in the seat-rail was in the collection of Percival D. Griffiths, F.S.A., Sandridgebury and illustrated in R. W. Symonds, English Furniture from Charles II to George II, London, 1929, p. 50, fig. 29.
