The first of Gauss' four proofs of the fundamental theorem of algebra, which earned him the doctorate from the University of Helmstedt under the rather nominal supervision of J. F. Pfaff. The three subsequent proofs were published in 1815, 1816, and 1849. (DSB V, pp. 298-311). cf. Dibner 114.
