CHARPENTIER, François (1620-1702). Relation de l'establissement de la Compagnie Francoise, pour le commerce des Indes orientales. Paris: Sebastien Cramoisy and Sebastien Mabre-Cramoisy, 1665.

Rare first edition of a propaganda piece for the newly-established French East India Company. Following Charpentier’s appeal to merchants about the potential advantages of the Company in Discours d’un fidele sujet, first published in 1664, the Relation gives an account of its short history including the early development of trade to and from Madagascar. ABPC/RBH record no copies at auction. Kress 1151; Polak 1627; Sabin 69261.

Quarto (240 x 174mm). Engraved title vignette depicting the royal coat of arms of France and Navarre, woodcut head-and tailpieces. Contemporary calf, early paper label with title in manuscript on upper cover (skilfully rebacked preserving parts of the original spine, corners restored).
