The great Dutch landscapist Dujardin left a sizeable corpus of drawings, some signed or related to etchings or paintings (P. Schatborn, with J. Verberne, Drawn to Warmth. 17th-Century Dutch Artists in Italy, exhib. cat., Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum, 2001, pp. 154-160). Few, however, seem to remain in private hands. Some of his etchings are signed with initials, either ‘K DV I’, or, like here, ‘KDI’, as a Roman view in the Frits Lugt Collection, Paris (inv. 2778; see Schatborn, op. cit., p. 155, fig. B) and some other etchings are (F.W.H. Hollstein, Dutch and Flemish Etchings, Engravings and Woodcuts, ca. 1450-1700, Amsterdam, 1951, p. 29, no. 4, p. 30, no. 6, p. 39, nos. 35-37, ill.). If made from life, the present drawing would probably depict a site in France or Italy.
