Il monocromo offre l'ultima possibilità alla pittura di distinguersi dalle altre arti, [...] la superficie, che in varie occasioni ha descritto, alluso e suggerito, ed è stata teatro di idilli, drammi e deliri, ora tace. Un sipario monocromo è calato alla fine dell'ultimo atto pittorico e sarebbe del tutto vano indugiare in una mistica contemplazione.
