JEAN-LÉON GÉRÔME (FRENCH, 1824-1904)

The debut of 'Bellone' at the 1893 Salon marked a stunning and critically-acclaimed collaboration between the artist, foundry and their master craftsmen compatriots in various other media. Originally completed in silvered bronze, ivory and Lalique glass, Gerome's avant-garde work was a sculptural phenomenon and divided critics of the Salon, which depicting a jarring and representation of the Roman deity in all its polychrome glory. A patinated plaster and glass version of the model in bust-form is housed in the Musée Georges-Garret, Vesoul and another example was sold Sotheby's London, 25 May 2016, lot 71 (£25,000).
