Horses of this type are very rare. Only one other pair is known in a French private collection. Compare a close example of a pair of recumbent cows modelled with naturalistically painted hair illustrated in Mandarin and Menagerie: Chinese and Japanese Export Ceramic Figures, Volume I: The James E. Sowell Collection, Cohen & Cohen, 2008, Pl.12.4, pp. 182-183. See a very close pair of horses sold at Christie's Paris, 8 December 2021, lot 284.
