The jaw-dropping RM012 tourbillon is described by Richard Mille as “a model that represents the best in technical, architectural and aesthetic detail.” The emergence of this prototype, one of four prototypes produced before the final version was launched, is extremely exciting for Richard Mille collectors and enthusiasts. Furthermore, this prototype is particularly special. Made of platinum, the case is inscribed to the back of the case with the dedication by Richard Mille 'Une Montre Legende – Un Homme Legende', the coming together of two titans in their respective fields.

Two years in development, the RM012 is, in common with all Richard Mille timepieces, a remarkable feat of engineering that showcases both new materials and an incredible skill in assembly which took several months. Whilst the style and shape of the case is classic and instantly recognizable Richard Mille, the tubular structure of the movement is something quite extraordinary and sculptural, yet apparently effortlessly achieves visual harmony. It was in fact the first tourbillon movement design to dispense with the usual baseplate movement construction. The tubes are made of a material called ‘phynox’ and form a rigid structure which supports and integrates the entire movement, all made to within an incredible one micron tolerance. In addition the movement is extremely tolerant to shock, temperature variations and corrosion.

The RM 012 led to Richard Mille being awarded the ‘Aiguille d'Or’ at the Grand Prix de l’Horlogerie de Genève along with the ‘Grand Prix de l’Horlogerie’ – Asia Edition, in recognition of its revolutionary concept.
