NORTHERN FOLLOWER OF TIZIANO VECELLIO, CALLED TITIAN

This work, by an unidentified artist from Northern Europe, reproduces Titian’s widely recognizable composition Lady with a Mirror (Louvre, Paris), with the notable difference in the female figure, who is presented here nude. The composition clearly circulated Europe, as evidenced by an early copy of the work, painted by Barthel Behem and signed with his monogram and dated 1534. Additional copies, including those in the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya, Barcelona, Prague Castle, Prague, and another sold at Christie’s in New York on the 10th June 2022, offer further verification, not only of how highly prized compositions by Titian were throughout Europe, but also of the possibility that versions of this composition would have been available to the author of this work outside of Italy.
