AFTER FRANCIS COTES

The present painting is an early copy after a pastel that was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1770 (see E.M. Johnson, Francis Cotes, Oxford, 1976, p. 164, no. 36.). Neil Jaffares was the first to identify Cote's wife, Sarah, as the sitter of that pastel (see N. Jaffares, 'Francis Cotes (1726-1770) and his family', The British Art Journal, XVI, 2016, p. 71.).

We are grateful to Dr. Martin Postle and Jonny Yarker for their assistance cataloguing this work.
