This butterfly originally decorated a hair comb and was created in November 1900. Several gemstones were replaced at the time of purchase and a detachable brooch fitting was later added. It was previously owned by Elizabeth Taylor and sold in 2011 in the famous auction The Collection of Elizabeth Taylor: The Legendary Jewels as lot 24 it achieved the staggering amount of USD 122,500.
ART NOUVEAU
The Art Nouveau movement was a reaction to the Industrial age that preceded it. From the early 1890s until about 1910 it captured the atmosphere and passion of the fin de siècle, and the moral and artistic freedom that characterized the period. Jewellery was one of the purest and most successful expression of the new aesthetic and this delicate butterfly brooch signed Boucheron, epitomizes this new approach.
Rejecting old traditions jeweller of that artistic period, strove to make hard metals and gems appear as soft, liquid, and organic substances. Sensuous plant forms surged with new lines, the female form struggled towards a new freedom and insects became fantasy creatures.
PLIQUE-A-JOUR ENAMEL
All the materials used were chosen for their artistic merit and not their intrinsic value, and enamel was the most important. The plique-à-jour technique was undoubtedly the most advanced and important form of the enameling process as well as the most difficult and delicate. Revived from Byzantine period, plique-à-jour was constructed in cells as was cloisonné, but instead of a closed back, it was open to allow the light to shine through, adding translucency.
