Figure majeure de l’avant-garde roumaine, Victor Brauner fut rattaché au surréalisme qu’il mena, grâce à des sources d’inspiration nouvelles, vers des contrées inexplorées. S’inspirant de la mythologie, du folklore ou encore de l’ésotérisme, Brauner produit une Œuvre personnelle et unique, peuplée d’êtres hybrides, entre humanité et animalité et de créatures insolites. À compter du début des années 1950, Brauner se détourne d’un surréalisme trop exubérant pour s’adonner à une peinture plus singulière. Horizon intérieur, huile sur toile réalisée cinq années avant le décès de l’artiste, en est emblématique. Les couleurs sont sombres tandis que les formes deviennent plus schématiques et aplanies ; inspirées probablement par les objets d’art africain, de Papouasie-Nouvelle Guinée et d’Amérique du Sud que Brauner s’était mis à collectionner peu de temps auparavant.
Jusqu’à ses dernières années de production, comme en atteste Horizon Intérieur, Victor Brauner s’est attaché à représenter des yeux: «Toute ma création est axée sur la vue et les attaques aux yeux» (V. Brauner cité in A. Jouffroy, Victor Brauner, Paris, 1959, p. 12) disait l’artiste qui, des suites d’un accident, était devenu borgne. Il voyait en eux « la clé du mystère de l’être » et précisait qu’on « ne peut pas regarder le regard comme on regarde n’importe quel objet. Le regard ne dévoile rien ; il met tout de suite dans une autre situation» (cité in ibid.).
A major figure of the Romanian avant-garde, Victor Brauner was linked to surrealism, which he led through new sources of inspiration to unexplored lands. Drawing his inspiration from mythology, folklore and esotericism, Brauner produced a personal and unique body of work populated by hybrid beings and unusual creatures. From the beginning of the 1950s, Brauner turned away from an overly exuberant surrealism to devote himself to a more singular painting. Horizon Intérieur, produced five years before the artist's death, illustrates his last manner. The colors are dark while the forms become more schematic and flattened; probably inspired by the African, Papua New Guinean and South American art objects that Brauner had begun collecting shortly before.
Until his last years of production, as evidenced by Horizon Intérieur, Victor Brauner devoted himself to representing eyes: "All my creation is centered on the sight and the attacks to the eyes" (V. Brauner quoted in A. Jouffroy, Victor Brauner, Paris, 1959, p. 12) said the artist who, following an accident, became one-eyed. He saw in them "the key to the mystery of being" and specified that "one cannot look at the gaze as one looks at any other object. The glance does not reveal anything; it puts at once in another situation (quoted in ibid.).
