Christopher Dresser (1834-1904) was born in Glasgow, Scotland and is considered to be the first industrial designer. He embraced the ethos of the design reform movement, which understood an object to be beautiful when its function is fulfilled without further ornamentation. He paid close attention to the production cost and utilitarian purpose of objects, which is directly reflected in his designs, including that of this teapot. This rare teapot design first appears in his costings books in 1879. The entry includes the cost to manufacture the item in silver, amounting to £1/3s/10d, a rather high expense for the time. Several versions of this design were created, including one with a hammered decoration for Tiffany & Co., New York. A similar teapot sold at Lyon & Turnbull, Edinburgh, 25 October 2017, lot 19 for £15,000.
