Telluris investigates mankind's early attempts to understand the formation of the earth's landscape. Noémie Goudal's research focuses on historical scientific theories, relating to the formation of mountains from as early as the 10th century, a time when philosophers occupied the role of scientific authorities, operating entirely from observation and mathematical deduction. Using large wooden cubes, Goudal constructs fake monumental mountainscapes in the desert, reducing the landscape into the geometric frameworks that used to theorise how they came to exist. The crisp black and white images possess an intentionally timeless quality, harking back to the age of analogue of scientific discovery, representing the landscape as an embodiment of mankind's efforts to conceive of the natural world. In the anthropocene era, Telluris conceives our understanding of mankind's relationship with nature as one in constant transition. Like all of Goudal's work, these images are about the idea of not just visual representations of nature being a constructed fiction, but also our notion of "nature" itself.
