King Freidrich II of Prussia ('Frederick the Great') generally avoided having his portrait painted, but he did allow some portraits to be made of him, including Anna Dorothea Therbusch's sculpted portrait bust which formed the basis of the present porcelain model. For a similar example in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, see by E. Köllmann, Berliner Porzellan 1763-1963, Brunswick, 1966, vol. II, pl. 121.
