FERDINAND-VICTOR-EUGENE DELACROIX (CHARENTON SAINT-MAURICE 1798-1863 PARIS)

Peintre orientaliste par excellence, Delacroix réalise de nombreux carnets de voyages et aquarelles plus ambitieuses, à l’image du présent dessin lors de ses pérégrinations en Orient, du Maroc à l’Algérie. C’est à partir de 1832 lorsqu’il part avec le Comte de Mornay chargé d’une mission auprès du sultan marocain Moulay Ab dar-Rahman que commence réellement sa fascination pour l’orient. Quelques aquarelles au style comparable sont conservées au musée du Louvre (voir A. Sérullaz, Musée du Louvre, Inventaire général des dessins. Ecole française. Dessins d’Eugène Delacroix, Paris, 1984, II, nos 1504, 1588, 1607).

An esteemed orientalist painter, Delacroix produced several travel sketchbooks and watercolours on similar subjects to the present drawing during his travels in Morocco and Algeria. It was in 1832 that the artist’s fascination in the East developed, when he left France with the Count of Mornay on a commission for the Moroccan sultan Moulay Abd al-Rahman Some similar watercolours are at the Musée du Louvre (see A.
