拍品 1230 IMPORTANT ZHANG DAQIAN PAINTINGS FROM A DISTINGUISHED NORTH AMERICAN COLLECTION (LOTS 1230-1233)
“In the late 1980s, we began collecting 20th Century Chinese ink paintings. Our fascination with the master painters of that period led us very quickly to develop a passion for the paintings of Zhang Daqian. Our particular fascination with Zhang Daqian arose from the incredibly proficient technical brilliance of his paintings, but even more importantly the versatility of both his style and subject. There are few master painters during this period who made the journey from the most traditional of classic Chinese painting to the extraordinarily abstract splash ink style that he was famous for in his later years.”

The recipient Linghui is the pupil name of the famous performer of Peking Opera Meng Xiaodong (1907-1977), who studied performance with the famous Peking Opera performer Yu Shuyan. Meng moved to Hong Kong in 1947 and met Zhang Daqian for the first time, after admiring each other for a long time in May 1952. They maintained a close friendship since. Zhang also dedicated his works to Meng as gifts very often. Meng moved to Taipei in 1967 and lived in seclusion, yet was in touch with Zhang frequently. After her passing in 1977, Zhang grieved deeply and visited her grave in tears.
